My plan? A long beach hike.  The weather decided otherwise and no more than 30 seconds in, the rain came pouring down. To be continued another time.....

I almost ended up on a solo hike and I was kinda ready for one – but looking back I’m very happy that Rachael showed up…….. I’m often spooked by wildlife and I simply can't stand the amount of spiderwebs I encounter on the trails lately. On the trails they’re most often perfectly camouflaged and you do not realize they’re there until you’re in them, face first. A web-collision on the trail is much easier to handle if you have a hiking buddy because she/he can look you over and make sure you don’t end up with a hitchhiker on your body….. This weekend’s hike took place on Loop A on the Citrus Tract in the Withlacoochee State Forest. After signing the trail log we started at the Holder Mine campground on our 8.5 mile excursion. Clearwater Lake to Alexander Springs

Did I mention that I prefer solo hiking to group outings? Well, this one was not a solo hike, but the location has long been on my “to-do” list and I really like Girls Who Hike (an all girls hiking group, which you can find on Facebook) – so I decided to tag along and play “sweep” – that’s the last person in a group hike, the one who ensures nobody gets left behind. As the sweep you can stay back as far as you like – thus ensuring you’re almost alone. A win-win situation, don’t you think?  This stretch of the Florida Trail runs through the Ocala National Forest, the most south-eastern portion to be precise. Our end point, Alexander Springs, is a freshwater spring that’s quite popular (read: overrun) on the weekends, to the point that the park closes its doors once capacity has been reached, letting only one car in if one car leaves. Jay B Starkey Wilderness

If you want to make memories, lace up your shoes and get out there! That’s been my motto for the past few months, as I seek to fill the time left open by not being able to run with other outdoor activities. Hiking and backpacking has turned into a new passion and I’ve been loving every second of it. This hike took place at Jay B. Starkey Wilderness park in New Port Ritchey a few weeks ago, just an hour’s drive north. Unlike most of my other hikes, this one was a solo outing. Just me, the sun, and my new Moment macro lens. Let’s suffice it to say that I have a lot to learn about this new piece of equipment! I started around 8:30 am and only found a few footprints in the sand other than my own: It was a cool morning from the first real cold spell that had hit Florida in 2018.
