Croom – Loop “C”, 5/11/2019

Of all the loops you can hike at the Croom trails, loop C is my absolute favorite, hands-down. We hiked this portion once before during a weekend camp-out, but this time we turned it into a day hike and it was absolutely fantastic!

This was a tough one.  No because it was physically hard or difficult, but because we encountered water early on and instead of moving ahead like I had wanted, I let myself get talked into turning around to find an alternate route. But there wasn't one. We "lost" the trail several times despite using the Alltrails app, and after a few hours of zig-zagging and turning around we called it quits. It's time to go solo. At least I'll be able to go where I want. Right after this sign the trail turned off to the left where we were met with some standing water. I should have forged ahead..... Looks like a trail.  But wasn't one. Dead ended in the bushes........ It wasn't all bad though.  After all - if you're not enjoying yourself you'll have to adjust your attitude. There is ALWAYS something beautiful, even if the day doesn't turn out quite as planned.

Jay B Starkey Wilderness

If you want to make memories, lace up your shoes and get out there! That’s been my motto for the past few months, as I seek to fill the time left open by not being able to run with other outdoor activities. Hiking and backpacking has turned into a new passion and I’ve been loving every second of it. This hike took place at Jay B. Starkey Wilderness park in New Port Ritchey a few weeks ago, just an hour’s drive north. Unlike most of my other hikes, this one was a solo outing. Just me, the sun, and my new Moment macro lens. Let’s suffice it to say that I have a lot to learn about this new piece of equipment! I started around 8:30 am and only found a few footprints in the sand other than my own: It was a cool morning from the first real cold spell that had hit Florida in 2018. Circle B Bar Reserve

Circle B Bar Reserve sits on the shore of Lake Hancock in Polk County. It’s actually a former cattle ranch which I found hard to believe when I saw all the water surrounding us. I can’t do this place any justice. Not with my pictures and definitely not with my words. It’s chock full of wildlife and a good set of binoculars would have served me well to get a better view of all those amazing creatures and I also should have taken the bigger lense for my Canon camera. You’re guaranteed to see a variety of birds, turtles, and gators…..lots and lots of gators. In fact, the preserve is home to the famous hump-back alligator. We think we saw him resting on an embankment, but who know how many big alligators call this place home. Check humb-back out in action  here!
